(Lav. Angust. ‘Melissa’) Hgt. 18-24”
Melissa is a beautiful and sweet angustifolia that originated as a sport from either a ‘Munstead’ or ‘Compacta’ plant. It comes from the Van Hevelingen farm in Oregon and was named after his wife, Melissa Van Hevelingen. This plant is a favorite on our farm for both its cheery appearance and saccharine fragrance. Melissa’s blooms are remarkable in that they begin as white when first flowering and then turn to a light pink as they open, resulting in a glorious stem freckled with an array of both white and pink flowers. The foliage on Melissa is light green, turning to a darker green as the plant matures. Melissa is a compact plant, ranging from eighteen to twenty-four inches high, making it ideal for the balcony gardener as it grows well in containers. It is also fantastic for culinary use with its floral, sugary quality unlike other lavenders. Melissa typically blooms in the late spring, and it has been observed that it flowers earlier than other pink-blooming lavenders. Some claim Melissa has a peppery flavor for culinary dishes. The sweet and pepper combination make it a wonderful choice for seasoning meat dishes such as chicken and lamb. Melissa is hardy to zone 5.
Wonderfully sweet fragrance. Great for culinary use. Zone 5-9
