(Lav. x. intermedia ‘Hidcote Giant’) Hgt. 24-36”.
Hidcote Giant is one of the largest lavender we grow here at Lavender at Stonegate. It was originated on Hidcote Manor by Major Lawrence Johnston around 1957. Hidcote Giant has acquired the name, ‘Giant,’ from the enormous bud spikes it produces in mid-summer. The stem length of Hidcote Giant is the longest of all the lavandins we carry and can grow up to 24”. This variety’s foliage is largely green in the summer and turns a silver grey color during the winter months. Hidcote Giant’s flower heads are a dark purple color with an amazingly dense configuration of buds. This bud formation is unusual for lavender, as it is quite fat and somewhat blunt in shape. A close second after ‘Grosso,’ Hidcote Giant has a very strong, camphoric scent. This variety is an excellent oil producer. It has been said that Hidcote Giant’s oil is incredibly similar to the lavender varieties growing wild in the fields of France and Italy. Because of its unusual size, this lavender is a great conversation piece and makes wonderful bouquets, both fresh and dried. It is also ideal for lavender wands, potpourri, and sachets. Hidcote Giant is hardy from zones 5 through 9.
Great for lavender wands, potpourri, or sachets. Zone 5-9
